Taoiseach Michéal Martin appointed TD Barry Cowen as Minister for Agriculture and the Marine at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine on June 27.

“Agriculture, food and the marine will remain a priority both as central to rural society and a major economic pillar. I reject the false idea that you can either support agriculture or care for the environment. Farmers are the great custodians of our country. We owe it to them to work with them to ensure decent incomes and a sustainable future for them and our rural communities as a whole.”, said Taoiseach Martin during his announcement of government speech.

Minister Cowen is a Fianna Fáil TD for the Laois-Offaly constituency since the 2020 general election. He was previously a TD for the Offaly constituency from 2016 to 2020, and for Laois–Offaly from 2011 to 2016.

Minister Cowen has been appointed to numerous positions including, but not limited to, Frontbench Spokesperson on Environment and Local Government in July 2012 and Frontbench Spokesperson on Social Protection in March 2011.

Minister Cowen was a member of Offaly County Council between 1991 and 2011 and acted as Chairman of Offaly County Council from 2000 to 2001.

Senator Pippa Hackett of the Green Party was confirmed as Minister of State for Agriculture with responsibility for land use and biodiversity.
