The College of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) is offering free Soil Nutrient Health Scheme (SNHS) training sessions for farmers in County Down. These sessions are provided both face-to-face and online, taking place over two evenings for a convenient knowledge-enhancing experience for local farmers.

Participation in the Soil Nutrient Health Scheme is mandatory to qualify for the new Farm Sustainability and Farming with Nature Payments, replacing the Single Farm Payment and Environmental Farming Scheme (EFS). This necessitates registering for the SNHS and successfully finishing the training provided by CAFRE. Failing to fulfil both requirements could impact future payments.

Countryside Services Ltd conducted two groups of training sessions for farmers in Ballynahinch and Castlewellan over two evenings, according to CAFRE.

One farmer said: “The training helped me to make sense of my soil analysis report and will enable me to put a nutrient management plan into practice on my farm. Having completed the training I have fulfilled the SNHS requirements to secure my payments in future years.”

Face-to-face sessions in the County Down area:

  • Strangford Arms Hotel, Newtownards: 9 and 16 January or 30 and 6 February 2024
  • Bannville Hotel, Banbridge: 11 and 18 January or 1 and 8 February 2024
  • Kilmorney Arms Hotel, Kilkeel: 16 and 23 January or 6 and 13 February 2024
  • Mourne Country Hotel, Newry: 18 and 25 January or 8 and 15 February 2024
  • Millbrook Lodge, Ballynahinch: 23 and 30 January 2024
  • Maginn’s Bar, Castlewellan: 25 and Thursday 1 February 2024
