The Irish Landscape Institute (ILI) was formed in 1992 from an amalgamation of the Irish Chapter of the Institute of Landscape Architects and the Institute of Landscape Horticulture of Ireland. This, in effect, joined private practice and public sector members, enabling them to further develop the landscape profession in Ireland.

Since its development, the Institute has expanded to its current membership of more than 250 full members with an increasing number of affiliate and student members, mirroring the rise in profile and strength of the landscape architecture profession in Ireland.

ILI is a registered member of IFLA Europe (International Federation for Landscape Architecture) and World Urban Parks.

Conferences have been held regularly since the early 1990’s which have stimulated debate about the profession’s position and facilitated the ongoing growth of member’s expertise.

The Institute has also made submissions on a number of national policy documents, facilitates the continuing professional development of its members and hosts regular seminars, webinars and social events.

Since its founding, the ILI has been committed to pioneering new approaches to environmental planning, and to raising the standards of landscape design in Ireland. The Institute aims to set standards of excellence in the fields of landscape planning, landscape architecture and landscape management, while increasing public awareness of landscape professionals and their work.

It’s bi-annual ILI landscape Awards highlight and reward the achievements of the Institute’s members. The awards give recognition to exemplary landscape projects by members across a range of categories. The awards last returned at the end of October 2022.
