Teagasc is working in collaboration with Solas to deliver a first-of-its-kind apprenticeship in Sportsturf Management.

This two-year apprenticeship programme will welcome its first group of apprentices and employers in September 2023.

Designed for those currently working in the sportsturf industry in Ireland, and for those that wish to, including golf courses, sportsturf contractors, sports pitches, race courses, training gallops, bowling greens and pitch and putt clubs, cricket clubs, tennis and parks and amenity areas.

Training for the apprenticeship will be provided in Kildalton College, Co. Kilkenny

The programme will train apprentices to work on plant science and protection, soil and rootzones, the principles of hydrology and preparing and maintaining a sportsturf facility.

In Year 1, off-the-job training for the apprenticeship will be provided in the Teagasc premises, Kildalton College, Co. Kilkenny. This will be delivered on block release for 6 weeks per year. Apprentices will also attend on-line classes, tutorials and have access to industry experts.  Apprentices will spend 80% of their time on-the-job with an approved employer.

Kildalton is the largest Teagasc college and a leading provider of training in Agriculture, Horticulture and Equine Studies in Ireland with over 1,400 students attending courses every year.
