At Growtrade, we highlight opportunities from around Ireland that would be suitable to landscapists, growers, turfgrass professionals, horticulturalists, and forestry professionals.

Here is one such opportunity from Teagasc, which is looking to hire a permanent research officer – horticultural growing media to be based at its Food Research Centre, Teagasc, Ashtown, Dublin 15.

Background
Teagasc seeks a researcher to join its Horticulture Development Department research team to focus on developing agronomically and environmentally sound alternatives to peat growth / casing materials, which meet yield, quality, and environmental requirements of the professional horticulture sector. To support the identification of peat alternatives, numerous parameters will need to be considered, chief among them is; alternatives to growing media have the potential to match peat casing or peat growing media in quality and consistency and are able to achieve equitable yields and quality compared to standard peat controls.

The successful candidate will join a team of permanent and contract staff carrying out horticulture research. While they will work directly with colleagues in the horticulture development department, they will be required to collaborate internally with other relevant departments in Teagasc and externally with researchers and stakeholders.

The closing date for applications is 29 November 2021. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.
