The Irish Landscape Institute is the professional body representing Landscape Professionals in Ireland.

ILI was founded in 1992 and is a registered member of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), a member of the Tree Council of Ireland and of the World Urban Parks.

ILI aims to:

set standards of excellence in the fields of landscape architecture, design, planning and management
support the interaction of landscape architecture with related disciplines such as engineering, architecture, urban design and town planning
support the development of landscape education at all levels in Ireland.

What do we do?

Landscape architecture and its related disciplines require both creative and technical skills. Landscape professionals work on a wide range of projects involving the planning, design and management of the external environment.

Landscape professionals:

research and advise on planning, design and stewardship of outdoor spaces within and beyond the built environment
carry out landscape studies, such as Landscape Character Assessment and Landscape & Visual Impact Assessment for EIA
implement and monitor strategies and plans for green infrastructure, landscape conservation and urbanism for the public realm and private spaces
design and manage open space projects, including streetscapes, plazas, public parks and gardens, sports grounds, zoos, botanic gardens, recreation areas, farms, burial grounds
undertake planning, design, restoration and maintenance of cultural, historic and environmentally sensitive landscape
contribute to the aesthetic and functional design of infrastructure such as roads, energy and major development projects
inspect sites and analyse factors such as climate, soil, flora, fauna, surface and subsurface water and drainage.

Becoming a landscape architect

Becoming a landscape architect and a full member of the Irish Landscape Insti-tute requires:

a level 8 qualification in landscape architecture from an IFLA accredited course
successful completion of the ILI Professional Practice Examination after minimum 2 years full-time experience.

Membership of the Irish Landscape Institute is available at corporate, graduate, student and affiliate level. Practice membership is offered to firms employing corporate ILI members.

Events, awards and CPD

ILI Conference held biennially featuring local and international speakers (CPD).

Continuing Professional Development – ILI offers regular CPD training including seminars, tours and site visits to its members, non-members and affiliated professionals.

ILI Design Awards honours excellence in landscape disciplines. Award categories include: Public Realm, Private Spaces, Institutional Landscapes, Green Infrastructure, Research, Landscape Management and several others.
