New National Certificate in Sportsturf Skills and Management

There is an ever increasing demand for high quality turf surfaces in golf and field sports, both nationally and internationally. The National Certificate Level 5 Sportsturf Skills and Management provides learners with the knowledge and skills required to maintain golf courses and sports turf facilities.

Learners carry out practical work on both golf and sports pitches including natural and synthetic surfaces in Golf, Football. In addition, learners will complete 3 weeks of ‘hands on’ work experience on both golf courses and football grounds.

Graduates of this program are equipped to work or indeed continue their study at limitless turfgrass maintenance facilities worldwide. Graduates may be in a position to undertake an internship program in Australia, New Zealand or the USA.

Award:

QQI Level 5 Sports Turf Skills and Management (5S2771)

Duration:

24 weeks continuous (2 days per week) or part time if preferred.

Entry Requirements:

Leaving Certificate, L.C.A. or equivalent, with some practical experience in Greenkeeping or Sportsturf Maintenance is desirable. Mature students without formal qualifications are welcome to apply for places on this course. All applicants are interviewed and places are awarded on suitability.

Course Content:

The following subjects may be offered:

  • Mechanisation (5N2559)
    Examines the use of machinery and equipment in the sports turf area, including; selection, set-up, routine maintenance, correct use, storage etc.
  • Sports Turf Establishment and Maintenance (5N2430)
    Equips the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to manage factors that influence the development, quality and maintenance of sports turf.
  • Turfgrass Establishment and Maintenance (5N2431)
    Explores management and establishment of the natural grass surfaces.
  • Work Experience and Career Preparation
    CV Preparation, Job seeking skills, Interviewing skills,Course setup Top dressing Irrigation Mowing Fertilisation Bunker maintenance
  • Pesticide Handling & Application (Boom 5N1797 & Hand held 5N0731 Applicator) Safe Use and Handling of Pesticides – Legal requirement for applicators
  • Performance Quality Standards Exploring the objective assessment and measurement on the quality standards of a playing surface.
