Teagasc Horticulture College National Botanic Gardens is set to host a virtual careers event next week.

Taking place 14 October between 4-5pm, the event will be held over Zoom where there will be presentations on the courses and enterprises in the college (landscaping, food, nursery and sportsturf), followed by a live Q&A session.

While the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted all education service delivery in Ireland, at Teagasc, the education programme is in full swing at the gardens with classes being fully delivered online through Zoom and Moodle.

According to a statement from Teagasc, all staff and students are “acutely aware of the need to abide by HSE restrictions with social distancing being the norm along with washing hands and wearing facemasks and using hand sanitiser at all times.”

“Our current plan for horticulture course delivery includes a combination of online theory classes which can be taken by the student in real time or at a time that suits them, and for the purposes of practical instruction and assessment, small practical groups are held in the National Botanic Gardens or Teagasc Ashtown that consist of socially distanced groups wearing appropriate PPE,” continued the statement.

“Students have the capacity for learning online remotely and taking appropriate exams in a similar way. Students will need a suitable device to access the internet for this purpose. Practical schedules and class programmes will be outlined at the start of the academic programme in order that students can plan around this.”
